We invited papers for this Conference and asked authors to address the suggested topics below.
- Islamic history, Islamic societies and present day mainly Muslim countries are the main focus of Istanbul Network within the values and institutions of a free society.
- Comparative studies between historical periods, and various Muslim countries and societies will be especially welcome.
- Emphasis should be on analysis of why free society institutions are weak in Muslim countries, and on suggestions about how these can be strengthened.
Suggested Topics
- Liberalism, secularism and liberal democracy in present day Muslim societies and history
- Comparative studies, indigenous models and cultural attitudes in mainly Muslim countries.
- Individual in Muslim scriptures, societies, culture, history
- Social and political pluralism and tolerance in scriptures and society
- Public and private spheres in Muslim societies
- State and community in Islam: Rights, responsibilities and obligations vis a vis individuals
- The challenges to liberal reform in the Arab Spring
- The role of Islamic civil society institutions in bringing about and sustaining a free society
